Community Info - St. Cloud
Located along the banks of the Mississippi River while surrounded by a small metro area, St. Cloud combines nature’s stunning four seasons with urban energy. As the county seat for Stearns County, the St. Cloud area’s population of 160,000 is continuously growing. Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Joseph, Waite Park, and Cold Spring border the city, each providing different facets of central Minnesota. Moreover since Minneapolis and St. Paul are 65 miles to the southeast, St. Cloud’s location allows for both a convenient drive while maintaining its distinctive feeling.
Initially founded as three separate settlements during 1853-1855, the city of St. Cloud is the combined result of all three, when it was incorporated in 1856. As the navigation head on the Mississippi River, St. Cloud’s population was booming during the late 1800s. In 1863 Minnesota’s second granite quarry was erected in St. Cloud, resulting in St. Cloud’s still-upheld nickname as “The Granite City.” Today, although Cold Spring Granite Company has acquired all St. Cloud-based granite companies, making it the world’s largest granite producer, remains of St. Cloud’s granite past are still seen at the Minnesota State Reformatory for Men which has the world’s largest uninterrupted—non-gated—granite wall.
Although St. Cloud’s economy initially found success in fur trading and shipping, today our expanding economy is the result of manufacturing, retail, and service industries, as well as dairy and farming occupations. As the population increases, so do employment opportunities. St. Cloud offers a variety of K-12 educational choices of both public and private schools. Furthermore, St. Cloud has many colleges and universities, including Minnesota’s second largest university, St. Cloud State University.
Just as nature is juxtaposed with the city, so are St. Cloud’s shopping and restaurants: offering both many locally-owned shops and recognizable chains, the opportunities are boundless. St. Cloud’s thriving downtown includes the beautifully historic Paramount Theatre. During the warmer months, thousands flock to the renown Munsinger and Clemens Gardens.
