Community Info - Cold Spring

Just 15 miles west of St. Cloud is Cold Spring, whom the developers refer to as “the best kept secret in Minnesota.” Its slogan “Hometown Pride” is evident as the city feels distinctively separate from, although quite near, the St. Cloud area. Located at the gateway to the Horseshoe Chain Chan Lakes, Cold Spring offers an abundance in natural beauty, while simultaneously offering the convenience of a busy small town.

Prior to the nineteenth century, the Cold Spring area was populated by Native Americans—Highway 2, in fact, was originally a Chippewa trail. Moreover on Knaus Lake ancient burial mounds remain. In 1856 Cold Spring was founded by both Yankee Protestants who platted the town while German immigrants not only homesteaded the land, but also in 1874 founded Cold Spring’s brewing industry. It was this initial brewery, built on a spring that gave Cold Spring its name.

Cold Spring belongs to Independent School District 750 which consists of three communities:
Rockville, Cold Spring, and Richmond. It consists of three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school; the last of which, named Rocori, is derived from the first two letters of each community. Furthermore, within the district are three private elementary schools.

Thriving on its industries, Cold Spring has a growing economy. Cold Spring Granite Company the world’s largest supplier of industrial granite, is the area’s leading employer. One of Minnesota’s last independent breweries is Gluek Brewery that is located in Cold Spring—a tour of its facilities is a must!

Because of Cold Spring’s location, outdoor activities thrive. With groomed trails year-round, residents enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Easy access to lakes allows for fishing, water-skiing, and boating.
