Community Info - Sauk Rapids

 Sauk Rapids rests on the Mississippi River’s rapids near its confluence with the Sauk River—hence the city’s name.

Sauk Rapids has a vibrant history. Because it was the northernmost point of the Mississippi River’s steamboat navigation, Sauk Rapid’s early population soared. Not only did Sauk Rapids have the area’s most businesses, but in 1854, it also had Minnesota’s second newspaper, known as the Sauk Rapids Frontiersman. Sauk Rapids was on its way to becoming a prominent Minnesota city—until the tornado disaster of 1886, which unfortunately destroyed all businesses.

Despite this major historical setback, Sauk Rapids continues to grow. Today it has a population of 13,000. With this growing population, Sauk Rapids continues to serve its community through parks and high recreation standards. Having both 23 parks and active community sports, Sauk Rapids encourages outdoor endeavors.

Sauk Rapid’s educational system consists of Independent School District 47, with four elementary schools (one is private), a middle school, and a high school.

In spring of 2008, a new bridge over the Mississippi River, connecting downtown Sauk Rapids with St. Cloud, was completed. Having had to rebuild much of Sauk Rapids’ downtown, the new cityscape offers decorative sidewalks, landscaped mediums, and ornamental streetlights.
